Biking

The Gitchi-Gami State Trail, located along the North Shore of Lake Superior, will eventually offer miles (86 to be exact) of scenic views complete with gently rolling hills, winding pathways, panoramic Lake Superior views, and rocky shorelines. Currently, the longest completed segment extends from Beaver Bay to Gooseberry Falls State Park, a distance of 14 miles.

From the Silver Bay Area, enjoy the north shore trail system with access points at the Split Rock Lighthouse State Park Trail Center, City of Beaver Bay, and – coming soon - a new Silver Bay to Beaver Bay segment. Currently, 21 of the proposed 86 miles are paved and open to the public for non-motorized use, including in-line skating. When complete, the trail will connect five state parks, including the Silver Bay Area’s own Split Rock Lighthouse and Tettegouche State Park and include four of Minnesota's Scientific and Natural Areas (SNAs).

If mountain biking is more your style, we have numerous trails that are up to the challenge. The Red Dot trail system, with trailheads in Beaver Bay and Silver Bay, is a nicely graveled and bladed trail system that parallels a broad expanse of cliffs and rock formations. The Red Dot displays several of the north shore’s historic and towering white pine trees. Don’t forget to look up once in awhile...these trees reign high above the forest canopy. You can also enjoy a leisurely rest stop at Bean Lake after powering down these scenic trails.

Kids want to play too? The City of Silver Bay is currently working towards plans for a bike park designed with hours of fun and stunts for your little adventurer. Stay tuned!

Don’t forget to check out our biking checklist.
